Botanical Description:
The Chamomile plant can grow up to twenty inches tall. It is a
member of the Daisy family. The Chamomile flower has a strong
aroma scent. Roman Chamomile is usually propagated by root
division, while German Chamomile seeds are sown directly in early
spring. The fresh Roman Chamomile is strongly and agreeably
aromatic, with a distinct scent of apple.
Fragrance: A
therapeutic-grade Roman Chamomile oil should have warm, flowery,
grassy top notes and sweet, fruity apple, herbaceous undertones.
Fragrant Effect:
Psychologically, Chamomile is calming, balancing and
deeply relaxing. Even in a very small concentrations, it has a strong soothing and calming effect
and is an excellent choice
to use for calming meditations.
Blends Well With:
Roman Chamomile oil blends well with Bergamot, Clary Sage, Geranium,
Jasmine, Labdanum, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Neroli, Oakmoss,
Patchouli, Rose and Ylang Ylang.
Therapeutic Properties:
Chamomile oil has a wide range of therapeutic properties including
anti-anemic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antineuralgic, antiseptic,
antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, cholagogue, cicatrisant, digestive,
emmenagogic, febrifugal, hepatic, hypnotic, sedative, stomachic, sudorific,
tonic, vermifugal and vulnerary.
Aromatherapeutic Use:
Roman Chamomile can be used in the treatment of acne, allergies, boils, burns, chilblains, colic, cuts, earache, eczema,
headache, indigestion, inflammations, insect bites, insomnia, menstrual
pain, migraine, muscular pain, nervous tension, neuralgia, pre-menstrual
syndrome, sensitive skin, sprains, stress and wounds.
Constituents: The
principal constituents of Roman Chamomile are esters (approximately
85%), pinene, farnesol, nerolidol, chamazulene, pinacarvone and cineol.
Safety Issues:
Chamomile oil is generally regarded as non-toxic
and non-irritating; however, it can cause dermatitis in some individuals
and should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy.
