Botanical Description: The Lemon tree, also known as Citrus limon, is a small tree or spreading bush of the rue family (Rutaceae), which grows to 6 meters high and produces its fruit which is cold-pressed to create Lemon oil, when the Lemon fruit is most ripe. It is believed that the Lemon is a cultivated hybrid of lime and citron fruits. The Lemon tree is thought to have originated in India and introduced into the country of Italy at the end of the 5th century.
Fragrance: Lemon oil has a distinct clean, fresh and light scent, with sharp top notes and slightly sweet, citrusy undertones.
Fragrant Effect: Pure essential oil of Lemon is known to create uplift in mood due to its sharp citrus notes.
Blends Well With: Lemon oil is a good all-round oil and blends well with a variety of other oils, including: Benzoin, Elemi, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Frankincense, Geranium, Juniper Berry, Labdanum, Lavender, Myrrh, Neroli, Oakmoss, Olibanum, Petitgrain, Roman Chamomile, Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang.
Therapeutic Properties: Lemon essential oil is believed to stimulate the immune system and assist the bodies defense against infection. It is also known to reduce body temperature. Due to its sharp scent, the oil is thought to work well in uplifting mood and aid depression. Other benefits include: antiseptic, astringent, anti-bacterial and detoxifying properties. The oil may also aid digestive disorders due to its carminative properties.
Aromatherapeutic Use: Lemon oil is known to have a tonic effect on the circulatory system. It is also beneficial in increasing vitality and awareness. In addition, Lemon can be used in the treatment of acne, arthritis, asthma, boils, bronchitis, catarrh, cellulite, chilblains, colds and flu, high blood pressure, indigestion, poor circulation, rheumatism, sore throat and warts.
Constituents: The principal constituent of Lemon oil is limonene (about 70%), which is known to contribute to the oil’s tangy aroma. Other constituents include terpinene, pinene, sabinene, myrcene, citral, linalol, geraniol, octanol, nonanol, citronellal and bergamotene.
Safety Issues: Lemon essential oil is known to be powerfully astringent. It is advisable to add the oil to a carrier oil to dilute its strength and potency. Avoid exposing the area of oil application to sunlight for 24 hours after application. Lemon is renowned for its photo toxicity which can cause harm to the skin.
